Even in winter you can look after your home. Here is what you can do without a professional.
Check gutters after every thaw
After each thaw, check that gutters are draining properly. If water overflows, the downpipe may be blocked by ice or debris.
Remove heavy snow from overloaded areas
If heavy wet snow builds up on the roof (over 30 cm), it can overload the rafters. Use a roof rake – never climb on the roof in winter.
Do not use salt on paving
De-icing salt damages block paving and concrete. Use gravel, sand or CMA (calcium magnesium acetate) as an eco-friendly alternative.
Inspect the facade after hard frosts
After severe frosts, walk around the facade – look for new cracks, flaking render or damp patches. Photograph them for spring repair.
Let frozen surfaces thaw naturally
Do not try to clean frozen surfaces with hot water – the thermal shock can damage paving. Let ice melt naturally or use grit.
